The Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (F.S.P.) CNIC has been conceived to develop research of excellence, competitive and of international relevance in relation to cardiovascular diseases. The CNIC has a research center of 24,000 m2, located in Madrid, with more than 6,000 m2 for laboratories equipped with a state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.

The CNIC is searching for an excellent Group Leader at the career stage at which she/he is consolidating her/his own independent research team, to lead and develop a research line in the field of cardiac tissue engineering aligned with the objectives and mission of the Cardiovascular Regeneration Program of the Center (https://www.cnic.es/en/research-programs).

Functions:

The successful candidate will establish a competitive research program in human cardiovascular tissue engineering and develop projects in one or various of the following areas: 1) modelling cardiovascular physiology and pathology in vitro; 2) establishment of cardiac repair/regeneration in vitro models; and 3) therapeutic use of in vitro generated cardiac cell lineages or engineered tissues.

Experience in the derivation of cardiovascular cell lineages from human induced-pluripotent or embryonic-stem cells, their genetic modification, molecular characterization and functional integration in engineered cardiovascular tissues will be valuable. Candidates should have a strong track record of postdoctoral and/or early independent research in the area of interest and present a solid plan for internationally competitive research integrated in CNIC.

As group leader in the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor, the selected candidate will be responsible for the development of the research lines of the laboratory. Moreover, she/he will be expected to obtain extramural funding from the most competitive national and international sources to finance such projects, and to publish scientific results in international journals of the highest impact factor in the cardiovascular field, and/or general medicine field, and/or multidisciplinary sciences field. The selected candidate will supervise the work of all members of the group, including research and technical staff. Other tasks include the coordination and management work requested by CNIC leadership including participation in committees and helping in other needs that may arise.

Mandatory requirements:

1. PhD in the field of Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, etc.).

2. Postdoctoral and/or early independent research experience in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering in an internationally recognized research center with a strong publication track record (i.e., a minimum of 2 papers as main author -first/co-first or corresponding/co-corresponding author- in journals ranked as TOP3 of their field in the last 5 years).

3. Main topic of research aligned with the objectives and mission of the Cardiovascular Regeneration Program of the CNIC (https://www.cnic.es/en/research-programs).

4. Experience as Principal Investigator, with a minimum of 2 research grants obtained from competitive funding sources in the last 5 years (i.e calls published from November 2017 onwards) (the CV must reflect reference of the projects and the call for funding).

Valuable requirements:

  • Scientific production: publications as main author (first/co-first or corresponding/co-corresponding author) in journals ranked as first decile in their fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. date of publication since November 2017). Only published papers (or available online ahead of print in the journal) will be evaluated. The CV must include the complete list of authors, the journal´s IF and ranking in the year of publication for each publication published since November 2017.
  • Fundraising: Projects obtained from competitive funding sources as Principal Investigator/Coordinator in the previous 5 years (i.e. active projects in November 2017 onwards). The CV must include each project, indicating the role of the candidate in the grant, amount granted, period of funding, and funding agency.
  • Training and mentoring: Experience in training and mentoring of young researchers (PhD students, MD trainees, etc), and participation in training courses in the previous 5 years. This criterion will be valued according to the number of PhD thesis directed (defended in the evaluation period), and role of the candidate in training courses.
  • Cardiovascular regeneration focus: Cardiovascular regeneration relevance of the papers published as main author (first/co-first or corresponding/co-corresponding author) and of the projects as principal investigator in the previous 5 years. Experience in the derivation of cardiovascular cell lineages from human induced-pluripotent or embryonic-stem cells, their genetic modification, molecular characterization and functional integration in engineered heart tissues will be valuable.

Selection Plan:

The RESOLUTION OF THE SECRETARIAT OF STATE FOR PUBLIC FUNCTION APPROVING THE COMMON ACTION CRITERIA FOR THE RECRUITMENT PROCESSES IN THE STATE PUBLIC SECTOR ENTITIES of April 11, 2022, set forth in point 6.1 that “Unless a specific regulation establishes a merit-bases recruitment system (concurso), the competition (concurso-oposición) must be the recruitment system”

In CNIC, the specific regulations approved by the Foundation's board of trustees establish a merit-base recruitment system (concurso) including a personal interview.

An Evaluation Commission composed by 4 members of CNIC’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) will evaluate criteria C1-C4 for all eligible candidates. Candidates with a total score higher than 75 points in criteria C1-C4 will have an interview with an Evaluation Commission composed by 4 members of CNIC’s scientific staff (see below). The candidate with the highest score will be hired given the total score for criteria C1-C5 is higher than 85 points

Maximum duration of the selection process:

Evaluation Criteria:

C1) Scientific production: publications as main author (first/co-first or corresponding/co-corresponding author) in journals ranked as first decile in their fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. date of publication since September 2017). Only published papers (or available online ahead of print in the journal) will be evaluated. The CV must include the complete list of authors, the journal´s IF and ranking in the year of publication for each publication published since November 2017. This criterion will be valued according to the number of papers. Special scoring will be given to articles published in journals ranked in the TOP3 of their category and/or focused on cardiovascular tissue engineering/regeneration, and with the candidate as corresponding or co-corresponding author - 30%

C2) Fundraising: Projects obtained from competitive funding sources as Principal Investigator/Coordinator in the previous 5 years (i.e. active projects in November 2017 onwards). The CV must include each project, indicating the role of the candidate in the grant, amount granted, period of funding, and funding agency. This criterion will be valued according to the relevance of the funding source, the amount granted, and the number of projects - 20%

C3) Training and mentoring: Experience in training and mentoring of young researchers (PhD students, MD trainees, etc), and participation in training courses in the previous 5 years. This criterion will be valued according to the number of PhD thesis directed (defended in the evaluation period), thesis ongoing, and role in training courses - 10%

C4) Cardiovascular regeneration focus: Cardiovascular regeneration relevance of the papers published as main author (first/co-first or corresponding/co-corresponding author) and of the projects as principal investigator in the previous 5 years. Experience in one or various of the following areas will be highly valuable: 1) modelling cardiovascular physiology and pathology in vitro; 2) establishment of cardiac repair/regeneration in vitro models; and 3) therapeutic use of in vitro generated cardiac cell lineages or engineered tissues. Also of high value will be experience in the derivation of cardiovascular cell lineages from human induced-pluripotent or embryonic-stem cells, their genetic modification, molecular characterization and functional integration in engineered heart tissues. This criterion will be evaluated as the weight of cardiovascular regeneration research in the overall scientific production and fundraising of the candidate - 20%

C5) Interview - 20%
