About the role

First things first : you want to know what you’re actually applying for. It’s impossible to capture every nuance of a role especially at a rapidly growing company like Mews but if we had to distil it down to a job description (which we do because this is a job description), it would be this :

Mews is an innovative and rapidly growing company seeking an experienced and dynamic Data Privacy Expert to join our legal team.

As Corporate Counsel with a special focus on Data Privacy matters and a key member of our legal department, you will play a critical role in shaping Mews’ developing global data protection and privacy strategy.

You will be responsible for building and implementing a robust Data Privacy framework across various departments, ensuring compliance with global regulations and best practices, and providing Legal Counsel on privacy matters across various jurisdictions and products.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it :

  • Develop and implement Data Privacy Framework : Design and implement a comprehensive Data Privacy by design framework. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate privacy considerations into the development lifecycle of products, marketing initiatives, HR processes, and other business operations.
  • Policy Development : Support and enhance comprehensive data protection policies and procedures that align with Mews' business objectives and comply with legal requirements.
  • Global Compliance : Stay abreast of global data protection regulations and trends and ensure that Mews’ policies and practices align with international standards.

Conduct regular audits to assess compliance and provide guidance on corrective measures. Serve as a legal partner to the business globally (EMEA, US, and APAC).

  • Contract Review : Draft, review and negotiate a variety of agreements, including vendor, customer, partner, NDA, inbound technology licensing, marketing, employment and others to ensure data protection compliance and mitigate privacy risks.
  • Privacy Impact Assessments : Lead Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) to identify and address potential privacy risks for new products, processes, and features.
  • Incident Response : Enhance Mews’ incident response plans for data breaches, including coordinating with cross-functional teams, conducting investigations, and liaising with relevant authorities.
  • Employee Enablement and Training : Champion training and awareness programs to internal stakeholders to ensure a company-wide understanding of data protection laws and privacy best practices in partnership with Security and People teams.

Build a Data Privacy Steering group as ambassadors of developed data protection policies, procedures, and best practices and develop knowledge bases.

  • Process Improvement : Implement process-related improvements to optimize the way we provide legal services to all internal clients and drive cross-functional alignment.
  • M&A support : Analyse data protection risks and compliance gaps from diligence. Collaborate cross-functionally to develop strategic Data Privacy integration plans for acquired entities.

Ensure compliance with Data Privacy regulations during and after acquisitions.

You’ll be a great fit if you bring a few of the below with you :

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal qualification.
  • Admitted to the bar, roll, or equivalent, preferably in the United Kingdom, the United States, or EU.
  • Active and in good standing with the relevant legal regulatory authority.
  • 3+ years with law firm and / or in-house experience required with a focus on Data Privacy, preferably in an international context.
  • Expert in data and privacy with in-depth knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and other global privacy regulations.
  • Have the ability to quickly establish trusted relationships with your internal clients. Must be able to work effectively, collaboratively, and cross-functionally with Mewsers at all levels of our organization.
  • Ability to listen critically and evaluate risk in light of business and practical considerations and provide clear guidance.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills. Exhibit grace and flexibility under pressure.
  • Be a self-starter and comfortable with operating in evolving and challenging situations. Be an accelerator of the business by providing proactive, responsive, solutions-oriented legal support.
  • Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with new ideas to build a better Mews. Be innovative and cutting edge.
