The day-to-day

The ALS Australian central procurement department is seeking a Senior Buyer / Senior Procurement Specialist in Procurement and Supply Chain to join a team that strives to exceed client expectations by delivering quality results on time.

Working with a team of highly professional personnel and reporting to the Procurement Manager, this position includes national & international purchasing, strategic procurement, and logistics support for ALS global operations with a focus on Western Australian operations.

You will be based in Perth, WA , to ensure the needs of our operations in that region are met. You will report to and be supported by our central Procurement & Supply Chain team, based in Brisbane, QLD.

The successful applicant will be a team player, with the ability to work autonomously with minimum supervision. It is envisaged that this person will be a self-starter who can learn the business requirements from the ground up and actively seek to further their knowledge in procurement and the scientific / industrial services industry to better service the business.

This position is open for an enthusiastic Procurement / Supply Chain professional, with a drive for excellence, attention to detail and a commitment to the Procurement profession.

Specific duties will include :

  • Interact with key stakeholders to identify business needs and build strong relationships.
  • Collaborate effectively with the central procurement team while coordinating operations across multiple ALS entities in WA.
  • Lead sourcing projects, negotiating the best possible price, payment terms, and delivery schedules.
  • Review and negotiate contracts with suppliers to enhance savings and value.
  • Select qualified suppliers and closely manage supplier performance (price, delivery, and quality).
  • Evaluate bids, negotiate, and recommend vendors for materials and services, prioritizing cost-effectiveness.
  • Negotiate pricing agreements and track and report cost savings.
  • Accountability for delivering tangible cost savings and value creation.
  • Resolve vendor disputes, claims, and invoice discrepancies to ensure fair payment.
  • Maintain positive relationships with strategic suppliers to ensure cost, quality, and delivery targets.
  • Develop and implement a plan for the consolidation of requisitions for new items, sourcing plans, and vendor agreements.
  • Conduct data analysis, make informed decisions, and present results as needed.
  • Support the development and implementation of a common ERP system in 2024.
  • Assess and support the warehouse teams in inventory management and develop inventory plans for the warehouses in Perth.
  • Work with the international logistics team in Brisbane to coordinate international orders.
  • Ensure coverage back to centralized procurement for all Perth operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures and best procurement practices.
  • Represent procurement and supply chain teams in interactions with operations teams, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Understand the business needs across the region and maintain a high level of order fulfilment to support operations.

The Essentials

  • A bachelor's degree in business, Commerce, Science, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (Required).
  • A professional Supply Chain Management Qualification such as MCIPS, APICS, CPSM, or CSCMP (Preferred).
  • 5+ years of procurement experience in a manufacturing setting is preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the internet, data entry, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in ERP systems and inventory management, with Oracle experience being advantageous.
  • Demonstrated record of the ability to implement continuous improvement ideas that deliver cost savings, efficiency, and optimization of capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask.
  • Results-driven with a positive attitude, able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, ensuring supply continuity and procurement compliance.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English; proficiency in other languages is advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Be flexible and ready to adapt to changing priorities as required.
  • Ability to persevere in the face of challenges while remaining focused on improving the overall performance of the procurement and supply chain function.
