ALBA is the Spanish synchrotron light source, a large research infrastructure operating ten beamlines, complementary facilities, and an Electron Microscopy Center, this last in partnership with other institutions.
Currently constructing multiple more beamlines, expanding the Electron Microscopy Center, and integrating advanced data analytics, it sums up a wide range of infrastructures geared toward finding solutions to societal challenges.

Tasks
The successful candidates shall work at the Transversal Section of the Engineering Division with the following main tasks :
Equipment / Instrumentation design, as Project Engineer, (from the conceptual design up to the detaile d design) of devices / systems for synchrotron instrumentation including generation of specifications (picked up from the scientific needs), design reports and performance / acceptance test reports.
The Project engineer is the responsible for the 3D files obtained as output of the design, including assemblies and FEM.
It is also the responsible / spoke person in the different design review meetings.
In addition, to design and develop, mechanical and electromechanical set ups aimed to proof new concepts for high accuracy positioning devices including on-line metrology feedback loops.
This will include the assembly of opto-mechanical components and its characterization together with its optics by means of optical metrology.
All typical project phases will be included : from initial specifications to final construction, commissioning and characterization as well as the analysis of the measured results - Supervision and approval of the manufacturing documentation (2D drawings) produced by the draft-man at the transversal section.
Follow-up of the manufacturing process (requestor of purchase orders, contracts and preparation / follow-up of call for tenders if necessary).
Follow-up of the in-house manufacturing.
- Test and validation of the manufactured devices / systems. Acceptance test reports and mechanical metrology
- Support to other groups and divisions (experiments division and accelerators division) on the development of mechanical devices and systems.
- Depending on the evolution of the successful candidates, they could undertake responsibilities at system level engineering for the development of new beamlines,
- playing the role of Technical Manager in close cooperation with the Project Manager, and taking over the coordination of different design teams.
Support to the project manager on all the procurement steps.
Requirements
The requirements for participation must be met on the date of the deadline for the submission of applications and will be accredited by means of the CV attached to it, without prejudice to the power of the selection body to require the contribution of the originals of the certifications accrediting the qualifications, training and work experience invoked in the CV.
Applications that do not present the aforementioned or required documentation during the selection procedure will not be accepted.
The candidate must hold a master degree in Industrial Engineering, mechanical or electromechanical engineering specialty, mechatronics, or equivalent.
The candidate must have oral / written English communication skills, with an English proficiency level certified at B2 or equivalent.
Selection Process Development
The selection will be carried out through the competition-opposition system.
First of all, an analysis of the curriculum will be carried out (assessment of previous experience and / or professional history, degree, training and other professional
information relevant to the position).
The merits will be accredited by means of the CV attached to the application. The selection body may require accreditation by additional documentation, originals or certified copies confirming the experience invoked in the CV.
The assessment of the CV in the competition phase will be 40 points, which will consider the following aspects :
Knowledge / experience as a "Mechanical Project Engineer" including the roles of :
- Designer of mechanisms and mechatronic systems (positioning stages, sample holders, visualizing systems among others) (max 15 points)
- Technical manager for mechanical engineering projects (max 5 points)
- Project manager of mechanical engineering projects (max 5 points)
Up to 25 points (max 15+5+5 points).
Knowledge / experience on equipement and instrumentation design on a synchrotron and / or beamline, passive RF systems (mechanics) or scientiffic instrumentation in general (particle accelerators, astronomy, microscopy...). Up to 15 points.
The merits will be accredited by means of the CV attached to the application. The selection body may require accreditation by additional documentation, originals or certified copies confirming the experience invoked in the CV.
The best rated candidates, at least two, will be invited to an interview where the technical competence, knowledge, skills and professional experience linked to the position will be assessed, with a total score of up to 60 points.
A minimum of 30 points must be obtained out of a total of 60 points to be eligible. During the interview, and according to the skills sought for this position, the candidate should exhibit the capacity to work in an international environment showing a customer service attitude.
The interview will include at least
- Presentation of professional experience. Up to 15 points.
- Auto-assessment of soft skills and complementary education / training. Languages, interpersonal communications skills and other than those formally required for the position will be considered as a bonus. Up to 15 points,
- Vision of the job position. Up to 10 points.
- Motivation for applying. Up to 20 points.
In case of a tied final score, the position will be awarded to the person who belongs to the most underrepresented gender in the corresponding Division and subsidiarily to the overall company.
If necessary, alternates of the members of the Board Selection will be appointed by the president of the selection process, and the change will be published in the announcement.
The resolution of the selection procedure will be carried out within a maximum period of six months from the deadline for submitting applications for participation.
The selection process may be declared vacant if the selection body considers not to have found eligible candidates for the position although they might meet the minimum requirements.
